Rules of the road refresher - safe driving tips
Re-read the Driver's Handbook, renew your knowledge every two years. Copies of the handbook may be purchased from a bookstore near you, a Driver Examination Centre, or a Driver & Vehicle Licence office. The manual costs $7.95.
Take refresher-driving lessons. Many driving schools offer refresher lessons for drivers who want to brush up on their basic skills. Basic in-car lesson rates start at approximately $23 an hour.
Take an advanced driver's course specifically designed for previously licensed drivers. Many driving schools offer programs for drivers who want to improve their defensive driving skills and learn advanced driving techniques. For more information, check our local listings or the Yellow Pages.
Don't tailgate. Leave a cushion of space around you - a safe following distance is at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front of you. Pick a landmark on the road ahead, such as a road sign. When the rear of the vehicle in front of you passes the marker, count "one thousand and one, one thousand and two"; if the front of your vehicle reaches the marker before you've finished counting, then you are following too closely. Remember, only a fool breaks the two-second rule!
Be aware of different traffic laws outside of Ontario. Good driving practices are universal, but traffic laws vary from province to province. Before travelling outside of Ontario, contact local transportation authorities for driving information and regulations.
