Preventing road rage

Don't get mad, get even tempered.

  • Be forgiving and assume that other drivers' mistakes are not personal.
  • If challenged by another driver, take a deep breath and move out of the way.
  • Plan routes well and allow yourself enough time to arrive at your destination.
  • Try to relax, stay calm, remain patient and courteous.
  • Don't try to cover too much distance without a break (20-minute break every 2 hours).
  • Make yourself comfortable in your vehicle.
  • Avoid exchanging rude words, making obscene gestures or expressing anger in any way.
  • Avoid driving in the spirit of retaliation or competing with other drivers.
  • Avoid the temptation to accelerate, brake or swerve suddenly.
  • Respect the speed limit and keep the appropriate distance from other vehicles.
  • Remember: It is not your responsibility to teach other drivers a lesson.
  • Avoid the temptation to start a fight or carry any sort of weapon. It may provoke a potential assailant and could end up in his or her hands.
  • The left-hand lane is for passing only. Stay in the right-hand lane if you drive slowly.
  • Signal lane changes well in advance. Avoid cutting off other drivers.
  • If someone cuts you off, slow down and give the driver room to merge.
  • Remain well behind someone who is driving erratically.
  • Allow tailgaters to pass. Leave 2-4 seconds between your vehicle and the one ahead.
  • Avoid flashing your high beams or jumping a red light.
  • Use the horn sparingly and avoid gestures that might anger another driver.
  • Avoid eye contact with aggressive drivers - it is often interpreted as a personal attack.
  • When parking, use only one parking spot and wait your turn to park your car.
  • Avoid escalating conflicts; you don't know how explosive they can become.
  • Remain inside your vehicle in a hostile situation. Lock doors and close windows.
  • If you are being harassed by another motorist, drive to the closest police station or to a busy area to seek assistance - use your horn if necessary.
  • To remain safe, never lead a road rage aggressor to your place of residence.
