House fire prevention

Here's how you can reduce the risk of a house fire:

  • Keep a CSA-approved fire extinguisher on each floor, in full view, near a room's exit or stairway. Ensure all family members know how to use it.
  • Switch off/unplug electrical appliances or burners.
  • Install at least one fully operating smoke detector on each floor of your home. It is recommended to place one smoke detector outside each sleeping area.
  • Test your smoke detectors once a month. Replace batteries every six months.
  • If a fire breaks out that you cannot contain in moments, evacuate your family according to a pre-rehearsed fire drill, and call the fire department or 911.
