Electrical fire
Loading...

Avoiding an electrical fire is easy to do. Here's how:

  • Use only electrical appliances, fixtures and cords bearing the CSA or UL safety seal.
  • Never use electrical devices with a frayed cord or a plug that has been tampered with.
  • Install no more than the maximum light bulb wattage recommended on any lamp or fixture, both inside the house and out.
  • Use extension cords only temporarily, since voltage drops over distance can cause some appliances to overheat. Never run an extension cord under a carpet where it cannot be seen.
  • Never use fuses in a size different than that indicated on the fuse box.
  • Keep insulation and any flammable material or objects away from light fixtures, especially recessed ceiling pot lights.
  • If an appliance cord begins to smoke, unplug it immediately and do not use it until it has been repaired.
