Prevent Falls:

  • Ensure a smooth floor surface with firmly laid carpet. Avoid throw rugs and runners. If you do use them, be sure they're firmly secured with double-faced carpet tape.
  • Keep floors tidy; toys, books and even clothes are potential tripping hazards.
  • Keep doors at the top of stairs closed.
  • Gate stairs with a sufficiently high, child-proof rail.

Prevent Poisoning:

  • Lock all household products, such as kitchen and bathroom cleansers, in a cupboard.
  • Store medicines and vitamins on an upper shelf in a closet or in a locked medicine cabinet.
  • Remove any toxic plants from the house. A list of these plants is available from your local Poison Control Centre.
  • Be aware that even though a product may be "Green" or "Organic" it can still be highly toxic to children.

Prevent Choking, Suffocation and Strangulation:

  • Keep small objects out of reach of children. They learn by putting things in their mouths, and small objects can get lodged in their airways.
  • Keep blind and curtain cords tied up and out of reach.
  • Keep electrical cords tucked behind appliances.
  • Do not allow babies to sleep with pillows until they are old enough to sleep in their own beds, as they could roll onto them and suffocate.

Prevent Cuts:

  • Board up low-level glass that wobbly toddlers can trip and fall into.
  • Avoid using frosted or decorative glass that shatters easily.
  • Lock all kitchen utensils in drawers.

Prevent Drowning:

  • Keep the toilet bowl lid closed at all times.
  • Never leave a sink, bathtub or bucket filled with water; always drain them when leaving the room.
  • Never leave a child unattended near water; a child can drown in 1" of water.
