Here's how to discourage would-be robbers:

• Install one-inch deadbolt locks on each exterior door, including the door leading to the garage.
• If any key is lost, the locks should be changed as soon as possible.
• Keep your home well lit. Put up motion-sensor lights at all potential entry points.
• Install peep-holes on exterior doors.
• Windows in doors should be made of safety laminated or tempered glass.
• Fortify basement windows with adequate locks, solid frames, treated glass, and decorative security grills.
