Despite the vast differences in weather and geography in Canada, chances are you’ll never have to experience a large-scale emergency. However, it’s always a good idea to be prepared, especially before the hectic holiday season begins. Here are some simple things you can do to protect your family.Know your areaThe first step in preparing for an emergency is to get to know the kinds of potential natural and man-made hazards in your area, because there are different ways to prepare for each type of situation. Also, find out if your community has emergency radio and TV broadcasts, emergency sirens or other methods of communicating disasters.Have an action planIf your area has a local emergency plan or bylaw in place, ask what services there are, and how to get help when you need it. Then, create your own emergency plan, which should include:
Include your children in the preparation of your plan. Involving them in the process helps prepare them to better deal with emergency situations. Review the plan as a family every few months to refresh everyone’s memory.Create an emergency supply kitOnce you know the kinds of emergencies to prepare for, build your emergency supply kit with enough supplies for at least 72 hours. Pack everything into a container that is easy to store, access and carry. For more information on preparing for emergencies, visit Public Safety Canada’s emergency preparedness guide.
