Emergency KitsWhether you choose to travel or hibernate at home this winter, think safety first. How? Keep emergency kits in your car and at home that are filled with 72 hours worth of essentials for each member of your family. In case of a winter vehicle accident or loss of power at home, these items can help you stay safe and meet your basic needs until you can find help.

Your emergency car kit should contain:

  • A shovel, sand, traction mats and tow chains.

  • Road flares and flashlights.

  • Extra windshield washer fluid and fuel-line antifreeze.

  • A compass and map of the area you’re travelling in.

  • Booster cables.

  • Matches and candles for heat and emergency lighting.

  • Cold weather clothing, footwear and blankets.

  • Non-perishable food and bottled water.

At home, keep the following in a bag that you can access quickly and can carry easily:

  • Non-perishable food and two litres of water per person, per day and a manual can opener.

  • Flashlights and a radio along with extra batteries, or use a wind-up model.

  • A first aid kit, including your prescription medications and special items for infants or people with disabilities.

  • Extra car and house keys.

  • Cash in smaller bills and coins for payphones.
