Safe swimming tipsSplashing around in a pool, river, lake or ocean is always a summer highlight. Whether you’re introducing your baby to the backyard kiddie pool or plan to spend the day at the beach, it’s important to encourage safety around the water. To reduce the risk of drowning or injury, keep the following suggestions in mind.

Swimming

  • Everyone, from small children to adults, should learn proper swimming and safety techniques before entering the water. Enrol inexperienced swimmers in swim class and take a first aid course so you’re prepared for the unexpected.

  • Children under the age of three must wear a life jacket or personal floatation device.

  • Even if children know how to swim, supervise them at all times. An adult should always be within reach, especially with children who are not experienced swimmers.

  • At the beach, be aware of tides and currents. Don’t allow anyone to swim beyond their abilities.

  • Have a permanent or semi-permanent pool at home? Store life saving and first aid equipment nearby, ensure the pool is fenced in on all four sides and install a self-locking latch. Pool alarms and automatic pool covers offer an extra level of protection.

Diving

  • Always think before you dive. Water should be at least three metres (10 feet) deep and the area must be clear of rocks or debris. Remember that the depth of oceans and lakes change due to tides, rainfall and season.

  • Keep in mind that most pools are not designed for diving so teach children the dangers of diving in shallow water.
