When accidents happen, OneStep™ gets the claims process going and can arrange for tow truck and other emergency services. At the same time, you can also help at the scene of an accident.

Tend to anyone who's injured

  • Get immediate help by calling 911 for an ambulance.
  • Try to keep the person warm.
  • Don't move the person unless he/she is in immediate danger.

Be aware of your surroundings

  • Watch for and be cautious of approaching vehicles.
  • Turn on your vehicle's hazard lights.
  • If possible, set up flares or reflectors to warn oncoming traffic.
  • Make sure nobody smokes, lights a match or places flares near the vehicles in case of fuel leaks. If a vehicle is already on fire, remove the occupants, make sure everyone stays clear, and call the Fire Department.

Move your vehicle

  • If your vehicle can be moved safely, get it out of the flow of traffic.
  • If your vehicle isn't driveable, arrange to have it towed somewhere safe (your driveway or a reputable facility). Never sign a blank towing invoice — ensure prices are written on the invoice before your vehicle goes anywhere.

Get important information

  • Collect information about the other party (or parties) involved in the accident including:
    • driver name(s),
    • each driver's insurance company name and policy number,
    • driver's license number(s),
    • type(s) of vehicle(s) involved,
    • plate number(s),
    • location of each vehicle,
    • passenger name(s)
  • Record the name(s) of any witness(es)

Report the accident

Contact the authorities if an accident involves:

  • Personal injury or death
  • Criminal activity (e.g., impaired driving)
  • A vehicle carrying dangerous goods
  • An uninsured driver or a driver with a suspended license
  • Combined vehicular damage of more than $1,000.

In Ontario, make your report to the closest Collision Reporting Centre.
